In Alexei Balabanov’s drama shot like a silent movie there is no soundtrack in the beginning
The events take place in the late 19th early 20th century. It’s a story of two seemingly trouble-free families and a certain mysterious Johan, the owner of a photo shop which has been turned into some sort of marquise de Sade’s photo theatre. Gradually Johan ruins the families turning normal people onto freaks. The movie premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight at the 51st Cannes IFF.
