A screen version of William Thackery's "Vanity Fair"
The film is usually considered to have ushered in the era of color cinema. Becky and Amelia are classmates. Becky comes from a very poor family, while Amelia is wealthy. For Beck, a friendship with such a girl is a luxury. She manages to ingratiate herself with Amelia, becoming close not only with her but also with many of her friends and relatives. Becky tries to break into high society, using various means. However, it leads to a rather pathetic finale.
