Adrift and lost, he drives his battered pickup truck back into the desert. On this journey, Old Zhang crosses paths with the troublemaking runaway Xiao Wei and the girl Qian Qian, searching for her lost mother. Determined to escort a towering Russian back to the Soviet Union, the two youngsters believe that reaching the border and finding a blue train will lead them to their destination. Old Zhang joins their company, encountering the peculiar artist Wood and the discontented student Li Mo. Squeezed into the worn-out pickup truck, they navigate through the night, each heading towards their own ideal destination.
