The Russian Empire, 19th century

Anna, the daughter of a poor teacher, finds herself a hostage to circumstances: to save her father and brother from poverty she must marry the influential official Modest. As the lawful wife of Modest Anna becomes prey to the ruthless man. However, this unequal marriage reveals the truth about her mother's death and drives the girl to seek revenge.
