The film tells the story of the World Chess Championship match that took place in Dubai at the end of 2021
For millions of chess fans it was a dramatic three-week tournament between Norwegian Magnus Carlsen and Russian Jan Nepomnyaschy. “The Dubai Story: Behind the Scenes of World Chess” offers a unique opportunity to see that match from a completely different perspective. Never in the entire 136-year history of championship chess matches has a wide audience had a chance to see what goes on before, during and after the event – behind the scenes. Unique footage takes viewers on an amazing journey through the atmosphere of preparation for the match where every little detail matters, revealing what challenges the organizers face and what the audience does during the three weeks that the tournament is taking place.

TIMUR BELYI spent his formative years in the small town of Tynda in the Amur region in the Far East of Russia. Thanks to his father, a chess coach, he studied chess for 11 years, reaching a level of proficiency but deciding to not make chess his profession. After moving to St. Petersburg and getting his master’s degree in sociology, in 2008 he started working as editor-in-chief, screenwriter and director on major television projects. He is the author and director of more than 30 documentaries, such as “Tender May. Medicine for the Country” (2017). Editing director of the feature film “It's not Forever” and the highly-acclaimed web-series “Instalife”. In 2022, as a screenwriter and editing director, he released full-length non-fiction film “From Jerusalem with Love”, which received the Grand Prix and audience award at the Gorky Fest.
