«Executive Order» press conference report
On October 2, 2020, the press conference dedicated to the film «Executive Order» by the Brazilian director Lazaro Ramos took place. The picture is part of the Main Competition of the 42nd Moscow International Film Festival. Director Lazaro Ramos, actress Tais Araujo and actor Alfred Enoch took part in the conference via online feed.
Set in a dystopian near future in Rio de Janeiro, a lawyer sues the Brazilian government for reparation of all descendants of African slaves in the country. The authoritarian government responds by signing an executive order sending all black citizens to Africa as an excuse to repay the debts of slavery. Citizens are measured by their skin color, hunted, and exiled to Africa against their will. While the army and police enforce the law, he enlists his uncle to find his wife, a doctor who has gone missing, and joins an underground movement.
«This film is based on a theatre play produced 11 years ago, when I headed a theatre. It is a great honour for me to make it into the MIFF competition. Our film isn’t only about racism we encounter in the world daily, not only about the conflicts happening across the globe, including Syria. Our point is that people aren’t so different, and our message is that we should put aside our disagreements and live in peace,» Lazaro Ramos said.
Actor Alfred Enoch also emphasized the importance of the topics raised in the film.
«Our film is very relevant. It doesn't only touch upon the pandemic, but is also about the current sensitive issues that came to the foreground after the killing of George Floyd in the US. I was honoured to have been a part of this important film,» Enoch said.
Tais Araujo's character is a doctor who has never been interested in politics.
«Work took most of her life, but then she became pregnant and started doubting her choices. She faces an important question – she wants a good future for her child and she would like to change the world. So she has to make a choice – either she fights for the future of the country, or she takes care of her own happiness,» the actress said.
