В день накануне Пасхи главный герой, студент-медик, отправляется гулять по Варшаве. Он навещает в доме престарелых своего отца, и тот просит сына сходить в ломбард. В ломбарде по расписке ему вручают саблю. С сумкой на плече и саблей наперевес парень продолжает праздничную прогулку по городу, во время которой он знакомится с различными персонажами и влюбляется в прекрасную кондукторшу трамвая.
